About Domain
Names
1. What will a domain name give me?
A domain name is really just an alias for your IP number address. Your domain therefore
will allow you to have a World Wide Web address like www.yourdomain.com instead of
applitec.net/yourname.
You may also set up aliases for your domain so other people will be able to use your
domain name as their email address as well.
The domain will be used to reference your web pages. Your URL will be in this form: http://www.yourdomain.com/.
2. How long can a domain name be & what can it consist of?
Your domain name can be as long as 24 characters. The domain must consist only of
letters, numbers and dashes.
3. If the domain wanted is already being used with a .com, can we use a .net?
It depends on the nature of your business. Here is a brief description of the
OpenSRS's guidelines for top level domain names:
COM is for commercial, for-profit organizations
EDU is for 4-year, degree granting institutions only
NET is for network infrastructure machines and organizations
ORG is for miscellaneous usually non-profit organizations
INT is for organizations established by international treaties,
or international databases
GOV is for United States federal government agencies
MIL is used by the US Military
CA provides for the registration of all kinds of entities in
Canada on the basis of geographic location. For example:
yourdomain.ca or yourdomain.ab.ca or
yourdomain.calgary.ab.ca
If your company fits into one of those other categories, you may register a domain
using that extension. OpenSRS requires documentation for all
the categories above. Applitec Systems will be happy to help you with this process.
4. Can I register more than one domain?
OpenSRS prefers to register only one domain per 'organization'. An individual is
considered an organization in eyes of OpenSRS.
Some organizations have been able to register more than one domain and some requests
get rejected. If you need more than one domain for your organization, please provide a
reason for the additional domain(s). OpenSRS will make the final determination of
whether or not any additional domains will be approved for an individual organization. We
cannot be held responsible if the domain is denied. If denied you will be charged a $25.00
processing fee to try again.
5. How long does it take to get the confirmation?
Most "new domain" registrations are completed within two weeks. Modifying
domain name requests and transferring domain names to our servers can take a longer amount
of time, up to one month.
6. Is *www* included in the domain name when searching for availability?
No, when you check the domain name availability (see question 8 below), all you have
to enter is the domain name. OpenSRS does not register third level domain names,
which the "www" part of www.domain.com is. A search for www.domain.com will come
up with a message that says that name is available.
7. How will I receive the notice of confirmation?
We will contact you via email. We prefer to receive domain requests by email in order
to have evidence of email service, which is required when registering a domain. Applitec
will not accept domain registration forms without a valid email address.
8. Where can I find more information?
Check out OpenSRS for more information on domains.
